A Study in Transparency

Sometimes I distract myself with little tasks, and this one is one of the newest.
Inspired by the "painting a day" people, I decided to do a little study of a transparent water glass...
I had a small 8x10 canvas...and I think the whole thing took maybe three hours.
After looking and painting the base colors in the first hour...I began to see things emerging that I didn't see at all in the beginning.
For the first hour I saw only the glass itself, it's opaque qualities, it's blueness and all of the different tones of the blue. However by the SECOND hour, I began to see THROUGH the glass. I was firstly amazed to realize that there was a red tin, behind the glass that you could see very clearly! Later I realized that you could even see the pattern on the shirt hanging behind the tin.....
It really is a study in awareness more than even a study of the object. Secondly it's a study in color...the glass is blue, but because its transparent, you can see all of the colors of the room coming through and mixing with the color of the glass. Rich ambers, siennas, purples, yellows, etc all building up this thing we see as transparent.
I've also been listening to many meditation music tapes, which have repetitive tones and pitches, I think that that is definitely a help when it comes to "seeing". they help you really to focus and to "see".
